Inspiration: There’s no place like home

No matter how many times I click the heels of my red glittery peep toe pumps I’m not back in my hometown of Plainfield, NJ where just the sight of Victorian homes over a century old make you feel like you’re experiencing some kind of magical fairy tale.

So let’s try this again while I click my heels together 3 times:

There’s no place like home
There’s no place like home
There’s no place like home

Wishlist: Sloane Peterson’s Fringe Jacket

August 10th, 2009 by admin | Posted in Wishlist   No Comments »

No matter how many times I watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, I just can’t seem to quench my thirst for Sloane Peterson’s white leather fringed jacket and matching boots.

I love her cool calm and collected persona, her clothes, and her softspoken nature. In my dream world I’m as effortlessly cool as Sloane Peterson and my dream day is Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

I swear I will hunt down every last vintage and thrift store until I find a jacket like this one!

R.I.P. John Hughes: Share your memories of his movies

[left to right: The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sixteen Candles, and Pretty in Pink.]

Please join me in watching and sharing some of my fondest memories of John Hughes films while I remember his huge contribution to my life, to American pop culture, and to my love of movies that did not exist before I laid my eyes on his  100% real, unforgettable films. Please feel free to share your memories about John Hughes films too!

John Hughes–the brilliant, genius, and talented man behind four of my all time favorite movies ever–is dead. He’s gone and I feel like he’s almost taken a part of me with him because his movies are just so near and dear to my heart. I can’t picture my life or surviving the years of teenage hell without Pretty in Pink (my all time favorite), Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (my other all time favorite), The Breakfast Club,  and Sixteen Candles. In fact, I can’t even picture myself being the movie lover that I am today without having seen his films because they were the first films that I ever became obsessed with to the point where I could quote the characters, love the soundtrack, and copy the 80’s wardrobe in each movie. I can clearly remember watching each of these movies the first time and instantly being sucked and drawn into the movie because the characters, their lifestyle, their situations were so real and not sugarcoated or twisted around to be idealistic like most movies involving teenagers.

[1984's Sixteen Candles starring 80's teen idol Molly Ringwald. See the trailer below.]

The first John Hughes movie I ever saw was Sixteen Candles, which at the time I thought was the most popular film I’d ever heard of which meant I was not gonna give it the time of day to watch it. However, being that I was having such a sucky 16th birthday and the title was called Sixteen Candles I thought to myself, “Hey, why not watch it?” So I did. It was as if someone had put my entire life in a movie except made it way more hilarious. I laughed all my sadness away while relating to Samantha Baker’s awkward teenage looks, her family forgetting what’s supposed to be a “magical moment” in her life, her annoying nerdy stalkerish boy, and her lack of words around Jake Ryan.

[1985's The Breakfast Club starring Molly Ringwald, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, and Ally Sheedy. See the trailer below.]

One of the most memorable scenes from the movie.

Then later I saw The Breakfast Club, which rightfully so has a reputation for being that 80’s movie. I was so taken back by this film because every character was so real. While watching this film I didn’t feel I was watching a film. I felt I was there in that quiet school library full of real honest talk about peer pressure with  five students that seemingly fit the peer pressure enforced stereotypes of “a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal” to perfection –while they were all really something more– and one principal with too much time on his hands that he fills up by obsessing over how to punish harmless students and make their high school career’s miserable. Only in a saturday detention would students who would not give each other the time of day talk to each other and admit their deepest, darkest secrets. Being a high school student, I could relate to this movie so much in so many ways. I could really go on and on but lets just say I was seen as the wordless basket case who adds snowflakes to her drawings by scratching dandruff from her scalp onto the paper! But I also had a bit of the rich, popular snobby princess in me too.

[1986's Pretty in Pink starring Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer, and Andrew McCarthy. See the trailer below.]

One of the most memorable scenes from the movie where Duckie sings “Try a Little Tenderness.”

Watch part one of the movie here and the other nine parts if you’d like.

The next John Hughes movie I saw would be my favorite by him. It was Pretty in Pink, which I previously blogged about, and it will always hold a special place in my heart because of all his characters Andie Walsh was definitely the most like me in so many ways, there’s only one thing that we don’t have in common and because Duckie was so hilarious too may I add.  I fell in love with Andie’s wardrobe although it was so hideous that it was beautiful and I’m still laughing until my stomach hurts at Duckie’s remarks about the ladies room, major appliances, and his hideous but lovable duck man shoes. Of course, the ending made me mad! Andie should have gotten with Duckie instead of Blaine–the major appliance– but if the ending worked out my way it would send the wrong message. The only thing I didn’t like about the movie was the character Steff because I know so many real-life Steff’s and I always want to slap each of them…

[1986's Ferris Bueller's Day Off starring Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck, and Mia Sara. See the trailer below.]

Some of the most memorable scenes from the movie below.

The last John Hughes movie I loved to see for the first time was the very famous Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and I couldn’t have seen it at a better time. I was sick and tired of heading to that torturous prison cell they call high school. Even in my senior year, I still could not adjust to it. I faked sick–like Ferris–and saw this movie was coming on TV. I thought, “Oh God not another outrageously popular 80’s movie. John Hughes directed it, so I’m gonna give it a chance.” It was the best chance I’ve ever given anything! I laughed so hard from beginning to end and fell in love with Ferris, Sloane, and even Cameron’s wardrobe. I still want that white leather fringe jacket and matching boots that Sloane Peterson made so cool. Deep down I always wanted to be that soft spoken cool girl with the cool wardrobe and the cool guy friends. I still want that leopard print vest that Ferris wore while singing The Beatles hit, “Twist and Shout” in the parade! Oh yeah, and I still want to visit Chicago and go every single place that Ferris did just because of that movie.

I LOVE this movie. There was so much attention to detail in this movie that there was no way it would not be a classic!! Everytime I thought, “Okay there’s no way Ferris is going to make it out of this one,” he did and I was shocked everytime. When the movie was over I said aloud to myself in my empty room, “This is the first time I’ve ever rooted for the bad guy to win,” and that bad guy was the good guy Ferris Bueller. Also, I could relate to the evil and bitterly jealous sister Jeanie Bueller. She was so much like me that it was not funny! I loved Jennifer Grey’s performance in this film which lead me to love her performance even more in another of my all time fav films, “Dirty Dancing,” which is my 2nd favorite movie of all time. No matter what the occasion I can always count on watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to give me a good laugh while I imagine that I’m right there in the movie experiencing the “senior skip day” that I never took part in! Somebody please pass me a Save Ferris t-shirt.

So unfortunately, John Hughes is gone but through his movies and realistic unforgettable characters I know he will live on forever. I just hope that one day I too can make a huge contribution to pop culture that defines a decade, gets someone through the years of teenage hell, put real life on the screen without sugarcoating it, inspire someones wardrobe, make people laugh ’til they cry, and have classics that are still relevant and hugely influential decades later. Honestly, where would Degrassi: The Next Generation be without him?

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around you might miss it.”–John Hughes (a line from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off)

R.I.P. John Hughes, gone but never forgotten!

Inspiration: Chic girls on bikes

After seeing these pictures on Garance Dore and The Sartorialist, they remind me of my own chic girl on bike days in my child hood and makes me seriously question why I haven’t picked up a bike in 6 years?!?!

Since I gave mine like an idiot to my immature and obnoxious younger brother, I’d like to buy one like this:

But if someone would like to gift me with the Chanel bike, I don’t mind LOL.
