In fact, I can't even picture myself being the movie lover that I am today without having seen his films because they were the first films that I ever became obsessed with to the point where I could quote the characters, love the soundtrack, and copy the 80's wardrobe in each movie. I can clearly remember watching each of these movies the first time and instantly being sucked and drawn into the movie because the characters, their lifestyle, their situations were so real and not sugarcoated or twisted around to be idealistic like most movies involving teenagers. Then later I saw The Breakfast Club, which rightfully so has a reputation for being that 80’s movie. I was so taken back by this film because every character was so real. While watching this film I didn’t feel I was watching a film. I felt I was there in that quiet school library full of real honest talk about peer pressure with  five students that seemingly fit the peer pressure enforced stereotypes of “a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess, and a criminal” to perfection –while they were all really something more– and one principal with too much time on his hands that he fills up by obsessing over how to punish harmless students and make their high school career’s miserable. Only in a saturday detention would students who would not give each other the time of day talk to each other and admit their deepest, darkest secrets. Being a high school student, I could relate to this movie so much in so many ways. I could really go on and on but lets just say I was seen as the wordless basket case who adds snowflakes to her drawings by scratching dandruff from her scalp onto the paper! But I also had a bit of the rich, popular snobby princess in me too.

The next John Hughes movie I saw would be my favorite by him. It was Pretty in Pink, which I previously blogged about, and it will always hold a special place in my heart because of all his characters Andie Walsh was definitely the most like me in so many ways, there’s only one thing that we don’t have in common and because Duckie was so hilarious too may I add.  I fell in love with Andie’s wardrobe although it was so hideous that it was beautiful and I’m still laughing until my stomach hurts at Duckie’s remarks about the ladies room, major appliances, and his hideous but lovable duck man shoes. Of course, the ending made me mad! Andie should have gotten with Duckie instead of Blaine–the major appliance– but if the ending worked out my way it would send the wrong message. The only thing I didn’t like about the movie was the character Steff because I know so many real-life Steff’s and I always want to slap each of them…

The last John Hughes movie I loved to see for the first time was the very famous Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and I couldn’t have seen it at a better time. I was sick and tired of heading to that torturous prison cell they call high school. Even in my senior year, I still could not adjust to it. I faked sick–like Ferris–and saw this movie was coming on TV. I thought, “Oh God not another outrageously popular 80’s movie. John Hughes directed it, so I’m gonna give it a chance.” It was the best chance I’ve ever given anything! I laughed so hard from beginning to end and fell in love with Ferris, Sloane, and even Cameron’s wardrobe. I still want that white leather fringe jacket and matching boots that Sloane Peterson made so cool. Deep down I always wanted to be that soft spoken cool girl with the cool wardrobe and the cool guy friends. I still want that leopard print vest that Ferris wore while singing The Beatles hit, “Twist and Shout” in the parade! Oh yeah, and I still want to visit Chicago and go every single place that Ferris did just because of that movie.

I LOVE this movie. There was so much attention to detail in this movie that there was no way it would not be a classic!! Everytime I thought, “Okay there’s no way Ferris is going to make it out of this one,” he did and I was shocked everytime. When the movie was over I said aloud to myself in my empty room, “This is the first time I’ve ever rooted for the bad guy to win,” and that bad guy was the good guy Ferris Bueller. Also, I could relate to the evil and bitterly jealous sister Jeanie Bueller. She was so much like me that it was not funny! I loved Jennifer Grey’s performance in this film which lead me to love her performance even more in another of my all time fav films, “Dirty Dancing,” which is my 2nd favorite movie of all time. No matter what the occasion I can always count on watching Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to give me a good laugh while I imagine that I’m right there in the movie experiencing the “senior skip day” that I never took part in! Somebody please pass me a Save Ferris t-shirt.

So unfortunately, John Hughes is gone but through his movies and realistic unforgettable characters I know he will live on forever. I just hope that one day I too can make a huge contribution to pop culture that defines a decade, gets someone through the years of teenage hell, put real life on the screen without sugarcoating it, inspire someones wardrobe, make people laugh ’til they cry, and have classics that are still relevant and hugely influential decades later. Honestly, where would Degrassi: The Next Generation be without him?
